Matthew Nowell

Is the first time you have had support from the Dave Rayner Fund?
Yes this is the first time that I have received Funding from the Dave Rayner Fund. I feel extremely grateful and privileged  to be part of the fund for this year, and to have been provided with such an opportunity it is in my best interest to do my utmost to maximise this opportunity by racing and training to the best of my ability.

What is your cycling history ?
It has been a large part of my family history, for 2 generations. My grandfather (Peter Nowell) was an independent and later a professional racing cyclist, a pioneer in the development of professional cycling in the UK and was British Cycling’s expert witness in doping cases. My father (Chris Nowell) was a 1st category amateur who won many races at home and abroad on the track and the road. He introduced me to the sport and has been mentoring me since I started racing in 2013 aged 17.
What team are you joining in 2015? Tell us a bit about your team.
I will be racing for Hallam Cycling this season, this is the University team of Sheffield Hallam. I will be one, amongst a few, riding road and track for the team this season, with it being primarily dominated by mountain biking.
Do they have they a website we can link to?

What is your race programme looking like?
My race programme so far is consisting of Track racing in the UK starting  from the very beginning of the year which will be a weekly event up until end of March. I will be combining the track with road races in the UK, the first road race being on 1st March, while still in studying in the University semester. Once University is over for summer I hope to be heading out  to Belgium for the summer months to cut my teeth on the continental scene.
Are you going on a training camp with the team?
Unfortunately I am not. My training has been up to now, and will be done  in the forthcoming months, in the scenic area of the Peaks, near Sheffield. Unfortunately it is not always blessed with the best of weather riding conditions but that is just part of riding in the UK and I will have to embrace what I have and make the valuable training time I get, count! Although the bad weather I hope will help prepare me, for when times get tough when race conditions turn bad as well!
When are you heading out to Europe/USA?
As soon as is practically possible after the University term ends.
