The Lewis 'Spadger' Barry Award is awarded every year to the Dave Rayner Funded rider who has achieved the most outstanding performance or performances of the season.
The 2013 award went to Adam Yates who impressed all with his 2nd place overall in the Tour de l'Avenir backed up by a season packed with results. He also impressed the Orica Green Edge Professional team enough to make it onto roster for 2014 along with his brother Simon
The previous winners of the award have been
Matt Brammeier in 2010. Dan McLay in 2011 and Mark McNally in 2012.
Here is quote from Mark Barry
"After Lewis died in 2010 Carol and I were asked by many people to set up a fund to 'do something'. We considered many options but we believed that Lewis would have wanted to see his friends in cycling supported by the fantastic work done over many years by the Dave Rayner Fund and it's supporters. This is the charity that turns young cyclists dreams into reality and Lewis had dreamed of becoming a professional cyclist on the continent. He was always encouraging of the other young people around him and we felt he would be proud to be a small part of this wonderful work. We can now see riders at were Lewis' contemporaries benefiting from the fund and we derive great satisfaction from watching the progress of these young people in the best sport in the world."
Who will it be this year? We will have to wait until Saturday to find out...
